You asked… and here it is! Our easy to read ‘breakdown’ on blackheads, what they are and how to get rid of ‘em.

WHAT IS A BLACKHEAD?

Blackheads are also known as comedones, they are formed when an excess of oil (sebum) and dead skin cells become blocked in the pore of the skin, much like a cork trapped in the neck of a bottle. It’s when they are exposed to oxygen that they oxidise and turn black, giving them their name… blackheads. They can appear anywhere on the face and body but are usually found around the nose and chin area.

HOW TO GET RID OF BLACKHEADS

Blackhead are very stubborn in nature and because of this, they often take the longest to see results. Blackheads are NOT the result of your skin being dirty, so scrubbing your skin harshly is not going to work, in fact it can cause even more problems.  BUT… the good news is, there are 2 things you can incorporate into your 3-Step Program to help you get rid of your blackheads faster.

1.    Apply the REMOVE Spot Treatment 3-4 x daily to the affected area.

2.    Use a Face Cloth in gentle, circular movements to remove your cleanser – focusing on the problem area.

Sometimes these stubborn little beasts do need to be gently extracted by a skincare professional, l do not recommend that you do this yourself as it can easily cause scarring and damage to your skin. But l know you've watched Dr. Pimple Popper and if you're going to do it anyway, here is what you must do ... wrap your two index fingers in tissues first - if you just use your fingernails it will damage your skin and lead to further infection due to the bacteria found under your fingernails - and it will not be effective. The idea with extracting blackheads is to apply a dull pressure down either side of the blackhead to extract it from the base pushing up towards the surface. You must be careful NOT to get obsessed with getting-it-out, it is better to try tomorrow than to cause permanent scarring today. Always apply the Spot Treatment to the area after to begin the healing and soothing process.

4 TRUTHS

Makeup can contribute to blackheads – some foundations and primers can contribute to blocking your pores.

If extracted wrongly they can cause permanent scarring – extracting blackheads requires a special technique and if done incorrectly it can damage your skin permanently.

Stripping your skin with harsh products doesn’t get rid of blackheads –  in fact, it can make the problem worse, as it can result in your skin producing more oil to compensate. (Excess oil is the main contributor to blackheads).

Blackheads can appear anywhere on the body– even though they are most common on the nose (due to your nose having more oil glands than any other part of the body), they can appear anywhere on the body.

4 MYTHS

You grow out of blackheads - although blackheads usually appear during puberty due to hormonal changes, they are very common in adulthood too.

People with dry skin don’t get blackheads – it is very common for people with dry skin to get blackheads especially in the T-zone, however they are usually smaller in appearance.

Blackheads can be scrubbed away- blackheads sit too deep within the skin to be scrubbed away, the black surface area you can see is only just the tip of the iceberg. The only effect hash scrubbing can have is to damage your skin and cause more problems.

Blackhead removing strips effectively get rid of blackheads – they only remove the top layer of the blackhead, although this can reduce their appearance, it does not solve the problem - it is just a quick fix. The tugging motion that occurs when the strip is pulled off the skin can actually result in your pores being stretched and becoming bigger. Also, they take the top layer of the skin with them, making the problem worse. 3 good reasons not to use them!
