Cystic acne (also known as blind pimples) differs from the more common acne in that it forms in the deeper layers of the skin. It appears as a swollen lump under the skin and can be incredibly painful. Of all the forms of acne, cystic acne is the most likely to scar if not treated carefully as it can cause structural damage to the deeper layers of the skin.

SKIN TIP: DO NOTE SQUEEZE cystic acne.

Agh, the temptation to pick… l know cystic acne makes you feel like you need to ‘get it out’ of your skin, but it’s not worth the risk. Picking and popping the cysts may burst the infection under the surface of the skin, causing the infection to spread. Reduce the risk of scarring by leaving all cysts alone.

WHAT CAUSES CYSTIC ACNE?

Cystic acne is believed to be mostly hormone-related, however, there are a few other factors which contribute to the formation of cystic acne:

  •   Family genetics
  •   Diet
  •   Lifestyle habits
  •   Stress
  •   Hormonal changes, fluctuations or imbalances

Your skin’s oil glands are hypersensitive to hormone surges and react by overproducing sebum (oil). Cystic acne happens when a blockage occurs and the excess oil becomes engorged, swollen, or hardened in the deeper layers of the skin.

SKIN FACT

Skin that is prone to inflammation and excess oil production is more vulnerable to cystic acne.

WHAT YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE SHOULD LOOK LIKE

It’s important not to use any harsh chemicals that irritate or strip the skin as it can cause more inflammation. Treating cystic acne should be about keeping your skin calm and healthy. The less inflamed your skin is, the more comfortable it will feel. And the healthier your skin is, the quicker it will heal. When I suffered from cystic acne I found the best skincare routine was to use the real-u 3-Step program with the green CONTROL. Then I would go in with the Spot Treatment and apply a small amount to any active or emerging spots 4x daily.

HOW REAL-U HELPS

Our signature 3-Step program works on calming and healing your skin and delivers 4 key benefits to help break the acne cycle:

  •   Promote the normalisation of (sebum) oil production.
  •   Inhibits acne causing bacteria.
  •   Anti-inflammatory.
  •   Rebuilds the health of your skin.

To give your skin the best chance at getting rid of those dreaded lumps l give you my top 7 cystic acne tips.

MY TOP 7 CYSTIC ACNE TIPS

1. NO Popping!

Step away from the mirror Beauties and do not pop or squeeze.  Cystic acne, unlike common acne, isn’t typically “poppable”. You’ll only damage your skin if you try.  Two words to remember with cystic acne: Hands off!

2. Eat the right way for your skin

It’s important to avoid the foods that can trigger hormone surges, such as sugary, dairy, and processed foods. The right foods can work as an anti-inflammatory and help reduce the redness in inflamed skin, while also making your skin healthier from the inside out. Why is this important? Because healthy skin heals and repairs faster and is less likely to breakout.

3. Relax

Stress can cause your body to release excess hormones that can make cystic acne worse. Find time to relax and unwind - the more you relax, the better your skin will be.

4. Sleep

Getting a decent amount of sleep every night does wonders for your health. A proper shut-eye will help balance your hormone levels and decrease the inflammation associated with cystic acne. You also give your cystic acne uninterrupted time to heal.

5. Exercise

Regular physical activity is excellent for the body’s lymphatic system, which detoxifies your entire body. Exercise is also excellent for improving your mood and self-esteem, which both tend to take a dip when you’re experiencing the overall impact of cystic acne.

6. Patience

Cystic acne will test your patience to the max. But the truth is the less you poke and prod it the faster it will disappear. Some cysts do need to be removed by an experience dermatologist, but most slowly disappear once you have the right skincare routine and have set up changes to minimise your hormone surges.

7. Consistency

Be consistent with your skincare routine, morning and night Beauties!
